Bullying and How it Has Changed

I was never bullied in school. I suppose I was a lucky one because it was always easy for me to make friends and because I was so friendly, I usually had friends and a bunch of different groups. I did take it upon myself to befriend some girls that were being bullied though and we all still chat from time to time and they thank me quite a bit for helping them get through school. Unfortunately, there is a problem with bullying in this country and some of these kids decide that they can’t take it anymore and decide to end their own lives.

Even though I have already posted several articles I figured it would probably be a good idea to introduce myself and explain what this blog is going to be about.

The Prop 8 Downfall and What is to Come

If you haven’t heard yet, yesterday, Proposition 8, the controversial California ballot initiative that outlawed gay marriage by way of a constructional amendment was overturned by the 9th circuit court. The three judge panel upheld an earlier court’s ruling. Prop 8 supporters have only one place left to go and that is the Supreme Court of the United States. While this is a long time coming, I tell both sides to beware what you wish for.

Gay Rights: From DOMA to RFSA

Anyone who is involved with the gay rights movement, either for or against, is well aware of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). In case you don’t know about it, let me catch you up. DOMA was signed into law back in 1996 by then President Clinton. The purpose of the rather fast passage was the fear that Hawaii was about to legalize gay marriage. What’s the problem with that you may be asking, well I’ll tell you. Before the passage of DOMA, the federal government was basically required to acknowledge any legal marriage performed within the United States. Hawaii is of course a state, so they were worried about having to recognize any gay marriages, so in order to stop that, they quickly passed DOMA. So DOMA makes it so the federal government cannot recognize gay marriage and it also allows individual states to decide if they want to recognize the marriages as well.

Gay Rights: Sodomy and the 10 Commandments

For everyone that reads this, I wish to make a wager. Most of my regular readers I am sure would lose this bet. You new readers, in particular those readers that are against gay rights, would probably be surprised that you will most likely have lost this bet as well. What is the bet you ask? Well it’s simple, I bet you all that you have committed sodomy and that many of you probably didn’t even know it. We can talk about wagers later but I don’t think I am going to lose here.

Gay Rights: Until All Love is Equal

I hardly ever talk about where I live on here. Even though I was born in Tennessee I now live in West Michigan, near the city of Grand Rapids. I moved here around 10 years ago with my family. For people that aren’t aware of what this area is like all I can say is that it is predominately conservative. Now two things have been going on in this area over the last several months that I feel need to be addressed. Both involve the city of Holland, which is on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. The first issue involved the Holland city council voting and subsequently voting down an ordinance that would outlaw discrimination based on sexual preference and the second one is more recent and involves the organization Until Love is Equal (check them out here) and the controversy over them buying billboard space. So let’s look at these individually.

Gay Rights: One Hand is as Good as Another

So a couple weeks ago I was at home reading some news headlines and I came across an article about the first “victim” of the gay marriage law passed in New York. The article talked about this county clerk who submitted their resignation because they felt it was against their religious beliefs to sign a marriage certificate for a same sex couple. No big deal to me. If they want to quit their job over something like that, that is their problem. Anyhow, I decided to take a look at the comments for the article and just as I expected, there was the usual tripe; the bible is against being gay, God hates fags and my favorite, being gay is a choice.

An Open Letter on Gay Marriage

As I am sure you all know I am a bisexual and am currently in a relationship with another woman. We have twin baby girls and are deeply in love. Unfortunately the state we live in does not recognize same-sex marriages or civil unions. Obviously we have a problem with this because we do want to get married but we both know that it will take time to convince the government to allow gay men and lesbian women to marry each other.
